Content overview

Landscape

Landscape and context

The following resources can be considered ‘recommended reading’ as they provide valuable insight into the broader environment in which research happens in UK higher education and research institutes.

Resources include development frameworks, sector agreements and research reports. Topics include the career development and working conditions of researchers, the challenges faced by mid-career researchers and insights into leadership within higher education and research institutes.

Leadership and team development

Leadership

Leadership and team development not only provide professional benefits to Principal Investigators (PIs), but also enhance the overall success and impact of their research projects.

The resources included here will support PIs in motivating and guiding their teams, in particular fostering the career development of postdocs. Additionally, there is also information and examples to help PIs focus on their own professional growth. These resources include videos, podcasts, self-guided training programmes, advice and quotes, theories, templates and worksheets.

PGR

PGR Supervision

Supervising postgraduate researchers is a crucial responsibility for Principal Investigators (PIs); it shapes the academic and professional development of future researchers and ensures the quality and integrity of research in their field.

The resources provided here are designed to support PIs in effectively guiding and mentoring postgraduate researchers. These resources include case studies of good practice, strategies for fostering independent research skills, and information to help PIs navigate common challenges and enhance their supervisory skills. Additionally, there are statements that provide important context regarding funder expectations for research supervision.

Institutional

Institutional network and support for PIs

Institutions and networks offer a variety of support mechanisms to assist Principal Investigators (PIs) in their roles. These may include structured mentorship programmes where experienced leaders provide guidance to newer PIs, as well as leadership and management training workshops to help PIs develop essential skills for leading research teams. Institutions and networks may also facilitate peer support groups, allowing PIs to share experiences and solutions to common challenges.

The examples below illustrate the type of support available to PIs at a local level. While some resources may be behind a firewall, they can still inspire new provisions elsewhere and provide insights into what is available at different institutions. There is also a framework which might be helpful in developing new provision.
